Surface Neo and Duo: the two new folding devices presented by Microsoft

Microsoft has introduced two new folding devices Surface Neo and Duo , with double touch screens that, according to the company, will create a new category in the area of mobile computing.

➧ But, unlike the attempts of its rivals, the company has not opted for a flexible screen, nor has it decided to include a high-end camera system in the new devices.

➧ Panos Panay, director of products at Microsoft, offered the BBC a demonstration of the operation of the devices, before its public presentation in New York on Wednesday.

➧ "We want people to see the direction we are taking in terms of improving (user) productivity," he said, adding that the products will be launched within a year.

➧ An industry expert believes that it is not surprising that Microsoft has avoided trying to incorporate an "all-in-one" folding screen.

➧ "Given the problems Samsung had with the initial version of the Galaxy Fold mobile phone and the broader challenges around the fragility of flexible displays, it makes sense that device manufacturers are experimenting with alternative designs," said Ben Wood, from the consultancy CCS Insight.

➧ As part of this Wednesday's launch, Microsoft also announced several updates to the Surface range of laptops, which will be released later this year and are already available for pre-order.
